I am Emily Crawford, a New Zealand artist specialising in oil paintings, created through a combination of spray paint techniques, traditional oil brush strokes, and the manipulation of paint with my hands and literal dance moves.

10,000 Hours

I continuously upskill in my chosen disciplines. I maintain realism by accurately depicting the form and tension in my figures' muscles - but I enjoy employing an unexpected color palette for the skin. Challenging what we label ‘skin colour.’ Human skin is incredibly vibrant and dynamic, displaying a wide range of hues when closely observed. This is what I take pleasure in exploring and highlighting in my work.

Setting the Mood

I achieve the ethereal effect by spray painting backgrounds. When I'm truly in a creative flow, producing my best work, I enter a state where I can feel all the emotions in my body that I aim to convey when the piece is completed.

Rocking Out

I take all of that emotion and I strike, sway, and dance at the painting so all that energy and intent is embedded in the work...

A Supernatural Correlative

By combining painting techniques in this order, I produce an atmosphere that acts as a supernatural correlative, and by that, I mean the environment is displaying the struggle, effort, or mood the figure in the painting is experiencing internally.

Universal Language

Art has the power to communicate across diverse cultures, languages, and backgrounds. There's nothing more gratifying than witnessing people making a connection with my art through the profoundly human experiences it portrays.
